An 18 kHz detector will normally have a depth advantage on nuggets greater than 1.0g over a basic mid-frequency detector, and a 71 kHz detector will have a depth advantage on nuggets less than 0.1g.

This question we hear a lot and it is an important one. The short answer is that there are many variables that can affect the depth of metal is detected. VLF (very low frequency) hobby detectors can detect various depths depending on the ground conditions and target size. However, it is known that the size of the coil is usually how deep it will detect. For example, if you have got an 10-inch coil, it will typically detect at a depth of 10 inches. -

The difference between these two metal detectors would be for what you intend to use it for. Here is some more information to help you:
Gold Monster
The Gold Monster has been designed primarily for hunting gold. The beauty of the Monster is its simplicity and it is definitely a more grab and go device. It has a state-of-the-art auto sensitivity to gold nuggets of both small and large in size. It also comes with a choice of two different sized DD search coils to aid you in finding different sized nuggets in different environments.
Equinox 800
On the other hand, we have the Equinox 800. The Equinox is also capable of finding gold, but at the end of the day, it is a general-purpose detector aimed primarily at coin, relic, and beach hunting. You can walk around prospecting for gold in the morning and in the afternoon chase coins in the park, all with the same familiar detector.
Summary
Once again the thing to look at is what you really want a detector for. If it’s all about gold I would recommend the Gold Monster. If you are looking for an all-purpose machine that includes more tweaking options and can also find gold I would recommend the Equinox 800.
